The Person of Cultural Merit is awarded to persons to celebrate their significant contribution to the progress and development of culture.
Prof. Emeritus Iga invented a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) in 1977. He opened up "VCSEL photonics" , which has been widely used in datacenter networks and smartphones.
The Nikkei, Yomiuri Shimbun, and many other media outlets have covered the event.
