Quantum Nanoelectronics Research Center

I am Shigeru Nakagawa, and started working with FIRST as a professor in May 2022. It’s my pleasure to work with all of you. I received M.S. from Tohoku University in March 1991, and Ph.D. from University of California, Santa Barbara in June 2001. I have been performing various researches on visible and long-wavelength VCSELs and integrated optical interconnect using VCSELs at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Japan and IBM Research – Tokyo. I also worked at two startup companies, in Tokyo and in Santa Barbara, responsible for product development of optical devices and modules for optical communication. My research at FIRST will include surface-emitting devices and integrated photonics for next-generation computers. I will accelerate internal and external collaborations, including industry and overseas.
