On December 12 and 13, P&I Lab. held Medical and Biological Engineering Workshop, co-organized by Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering (Tokyo Medical and Dental Univ.), Research Institute of Electronics (Shizuoka Univ.), and Research Institute for Nanodevice and Bio Systems (Hiroshima Univ.), aiming to establish a network-type cooperation system.
The recent radical progress in technology opens up a variety of possibility for the laboratories attached to universities. Responding to this flow, P&I Lab. has been exploring “the new precision engineering which integrates precision and intelligence” in both research and education. P&I Lab. researchers are expected to establish a new field or to integrate given fields without being confined in a certain given field, which should eventually make a great contribution to society industrially or else. While P&I Lab. consists of specialties in various fields, such as Mechanical Engineering, Control Engineering, Electronics, Information Engineering, and Materials Engineering, recent technical progress requires further communication with researchers from wider perspectives. This workshop provided an opportunity for P&I. Lab and other three co-organizers to cultivate new research fields and application fields cooperatively.
While some members have been communicating with each other through conferences, this workshop made the first comprehensive meeting of four institutes. It began with introduction of each, followed by research presentations with a special focus on “Medical and Biological Engineering,” the common topic through all the institutes. […] Each session included active discussions that continued during the reception on the second day, which tightly united four institutes and made a fruitful workshop as a whole.
Overall, this workshop succeeded in encouraging the institutional cooperation among institutes. Currently we are planning to create a network-type research base for “Biological, Medical and Dental Engineering,” hopefully starting in 2016. Any support from universities, industries, and others, are highly appreciated. (trans. by pi-web)
