The NAE is a non-profit research institution established by the United States government in 1964. It is one of the four academies that constitute the National Academies, alongside the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), which was founded by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Election to NAE membership is regarded as the highest distinction in the field of engineering.
To date, 20 individuals from Japan have been elected as foreign members. From Science Tokyo, Honorary Professors Yasuharu Suematsu and Kenichi Iga have already been inducted, making this the fourth selection—the highest number in Japan.
