I’m delighted to join Tokyo Tech as a specially appointed Professor at Photonics Integration System Research Center, FIRST, IIR under the leadership of Prof. Fumio Koyama from December 1, 2022. Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have distinct electro-optical characteristics and proliferated as matured & dominant optical sensors to date. VCSEL laser sources have applications in multiple industries as diverse as data communication, 3D sensing & imaging, industrial manufacturing, entertainment (Metaverse), bio-medical (wearables) and space gyroscopes. More than half of the human population is directly impacted by use of billions of VCSELs as an essential commodity. After doctoral studies from Physics Department of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 2004, I spent my post-doctoral research in then P&I Lab during 2005-09 and moved to VCSEL commercial R&D for product development, manufacturing and commercialization in listed companies in Asia. Concurrently, I co-founded few startups with technology consulting and fabless product developments with an entrepreneur mindset! However, recent R&D innovations in VCSELs led to the development of next generation VCSELs for ultrafast (>100Gb/s) data communication and high peak power (>1kW/mm2) VCSEL photonic chips. Thanks to Honorary Prof. Kenichi Iga and his colleagues in 1970’s/80’s at Tokyo Tech for invention and R&D of the most valuable device to bless vertical laser light as life-rays to humanity. It’s an honor to contribute in this field again at its birth place and continue the gigantic spirits of applied research to next level for societal applications echoed by Emeritus Prof. Yasuharu Suematsu.
